RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Since the effects of sterilization on the Fiberglass Reinforced Resin Crowns (FRRCs) is not well-known the aim of current study was to evaluate the effects of autoclave sterilization on the fracture resistance, color stability, and surface composition of FRRCs. METHODS: A total of 48 crowns were used. The crowns were divided into three groups according to the sterilization number: no sterilization (Control Group), one sterilization (Group 1), and four sterilizations (Group 2). The microstructure of the three crowns from each group was evaluated using scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and energy-dispersive X-ray (EDX) spectroscopy. Thirteen FRRCs from each group were first used for color stability testing and then for the fracture resistance analysis. One-way analysis of variance (ANOVA), one-way repeated measures ANOVA, and paired t-tests were used in the statistical analysis. RESULTS: EDX results revealed that the weight% of surface silicon atoms in group 2 was significantly higher. Some crack lines could be observed on the SEM images. Statistically significant differences were found in color stability following the first and fourth sterilization cycles (p < .01). The increase in the sterilization cycle did not statistically decrease the fracture resistance of the FRRCs (p = .055); however, overall, a decreasing trend was observed in fracture resistance as the sterilization cycle increased. CONCLUSIONS: Autoclave sterilization caused some changes in the surface elemental composition and surface morphology of FRRCs. Avoiding unnecessary FRRC trials is important to reduce the number of sterilizations.

RESUMEN

Biphenotypic acute leukemias (BAL) are known as a type of leukemia involving cells with myeloid and along with lymphoid origin, in which genomic changes are detected. It has been stated that the most common genomic changes in BAL are t(9;22) and the translocations of the 11q23 region, these anomalies cause poor prognostic effects. We detected trisomy 5 (+5) in addition to the double Ph chromosome in a case where we investigated the genomic changes using molecular and conventional cytogenetic methods. Bone marrow transplantation was planned due to the poor response to prednisone. According to the information we have obtained, our report will be the first article to discuss the aberrations found in addition to the Ph chromosome in BAL and the effect of these aberrations on prognosis. However, the double observation of the Ph chromosome, which has a poor prognostic effect, is expected to affect the prognosis more negatively, this case will contribute to the literature in terms of trisomy 5. We think that more case reports are needed to reveal the anomalies and their prognostic significance in BAL.

RESUMEN

AIM: The aim of the study was to compare the success and reliability of an artificial intelligence (AI) application in the detection and classification of submerged teeth in panoramic radiographs. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Convolutional neural network (CNN) algorithms were used to detect and classify submerged molars. The detection module, based on the stateof- the-art Faster R-CNN architecture, processed a radiograph to define the boundaries of submerged molars. A separate testing set was used to evaluate the diagnostic performance of the system and compare it with that of experts in the field. RESULT: The success rate of the classification and identification of the system was high when evaluated according to the reference standard. The system was extremely accurate in its performance in comparison with observers. CONCLUSIONS: The performance of the proposed computeraided diagnosis solution is comparable to that of experts. It is useful to diagnose submerged molars with an AI application to prevent errors. In addition, this will facilitate the diagnoses of pediatric dentists.

RESUMEN

OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to describe the occurrence, angulation and mesialisation ratio of the ectopic eruption of the maxillary permanent first molar (PFM) and its correlation with the pathological resorption of maxillary primary second molar (PSM). METHODS: This retrospective study was performed using the subsequent panoramic radiographs of 11.924 child patients aged 6-10 years. Ectopic eruption status is categorised as self-corrected and impacted types. To evaluate the differences between the two groups (self-corrected and impacted), the angulation of PFM, mesialisation ratio of PFM, and degree of adjacent PSM root resorption were also assessed. The data were statistically analysed using ANOVA and chi-square tests. Pearson correlation was used to analyse whether a quantitative relationship exists between PFM mesialisation ratio and PSM root resorption. RESULTS: Ectopic eruption frequency was determined as 0.83%. The distribution of ectopic eruption according to gender shows a higher prevalence in males than females. In most cases of ectopic eruption, the eruption status was impacted. The impacted PFMs showed more negative vertical and positive horizontal angle between the PSM and PFM. There was no significant difference between eruption status and angles. Mesialisation ratio of impacted PFMs was significantly higher than self-corrected PFMs. There was significant difference between the PFM mesialisation ratio and the degree of PSM root resorption. CONCLUSION: Even if eruption disturbances do not occur frequently, making an early diagnosis is important to begin treatment at an optimal time. Although the relationship between horizontal and vertical angles and the ectopic eruption pattern is controversial, it is one of the clinical determinants. The mesialisation ratio of the impacted type was significantly higher than the self-corrected type. Self-correction of PFM was reduced in PSM with grade III and IV root resorption.

RESUMEN

The role of exogenous nitric oxide (NO) application in alleviating drought stress responses by enhancing the antioxidant activities in plants is well established for several species. However, none of the studies reported its role in protecting the watermelon genotypes from drought stress. In this study, we aimed to observe the effect of NO application on the physiological and biochemical responses of the two watermelon (Citrullus lanatus var. lanatus) genotypes grown under drought stress conditions by treating the plants with 15% polyethylene glycol 6000 (PEG 6000) and 100 µM sodium nitroprusside (SNP), which is a NO donor in Hoagland solution. Among the two genotypes, one genotype, KAR 98 was drought tolerant; while another, KAR 147 was drought sensitive. Drought stress showed a decrease in the growth parameters of both the genotypes; however, as expected it was higher in the susceptible genotype, KAR 147. NO application could not prevent the reductions in the growth parameters; however, it reduced the increment in malondialdehyde (MDA) content caused by the drought stress in both watermelon genotypes. Moreover, while drought stress condition reduced the ascorbate peroxidase (APX), catalase (CAT), glutathione reductase (GR), and peroxidase (POX) activities in both genotypes, NO + PEG application increased the APX activity in the tolerant genotype, KAR 98. Though the obtained results does not show the direct involvement of NO in increasing drought tolerance of watermelon plants, the increase in the APX antioxidant enzyme activity on NO application under drought stress confirmed its role in protecting the watermelon genotypes from the oxidative damage caused by the drought stress. Moreover, it can be concluded that the effect of NO application on watermelons' responses towards drought stress condition may vary according to the specific genotypes. As to date none of the studies reported the effect of NO application on the antioxidant activity of watermelon genotypes under drought stress, the present study may provide information about the mechanisms that can be focused to improve drought stress tolerance of watermelon genotypes.

RESUMEN

Background: Chronic disease of children can cause changes in the health-related quality of life (HrQoL) of the family members. Aims: To evaluate the HrQoL of healthy siblings of children with chronic disease. Study Design: Cross-sectional study. Methods: The study included healthy sibling of children with chronic disease (cerebral palsy, epilepsy, diabetes, celiac disease, hematologic/oncologic disease, or asthma) and healthy sibling of healthy children to evaluate the quality of life. We used the Pediatric Quality of Life Inventory questionnaire; the physical health and psychosocial health scores were calculated using the responses of the sibling and parent. The primary endpoint was the comparison of HrQoL scores of healthy siblings of children with chronic disease and that of healthy siblings of healthy children. Results: This study included a respective healthy sibling of 191 children with chronic disease and healthy sibling of 100 healthy children. The physical health, psychosocial health, and total health scores of healthy siblings of children with chronic disease were significantly lower than that of healthy siblings of healthy children (p<0.001). Among the healthy siblings of children with chronic disease, the lowest psychosocial health score was found in the siblings of children with cerebral palsy, hematologic/oncologic disease, and asthma (p<0.001). The global impact on the quality of life for healthy siblings of children with chronic disease was significantly higher in the self-report of the children than that of the parents (30.4% versus 15.1%, p<0.05). Conclusion: Most healthy siblings of children with chronic disease are physically and psychosocially affected and there is low parental awareness of this condition. This can increase the risk of emotional neglect and abuse of these children. Therefore, special support programs are needed for the families of children with chronic diseases.

RESUMEN

BACKGROUND: Invasive fungal infections, including hepatosplenic fungal infections (HSFI), cause significant morbidity and mortality in children with leukemia. There are not enough data to support for the best approach to diagnosis of HSFI in children, nor for the best treatment. PROCEDURE: In this multicentric study, we assessed the demographic data, clinical and radiologic features, treatment, and outcome of 40 children with leukemia and HSFI from 12 centers. RESULTS: All cases were radiologically diagnosed with abdominal ultrasound, which was performed at a median of 7 days, of the febrile neutropenic episode. Mucor was identified by histopathology in 1, and Candida was identified in blood cultures in 8 patients. Twenty-two had fungal infection in additional sites, mostly lungs. Nine patients died. Four received a single agent, and 36 a combination of antifungals. CONCLUSIONS: Early diagnosis of HSFI is challenging because signs and symptoms are usually nonspecific. In neutropenic children, persistent fever, back pain extending to the shoulder, widespread muscle pain, and increased serum galactomannan levels should alert clinicians. Abdominal imaging, particularly an abdominal ultrasound, which is easy to perform and available even in most resource-limited countries, should be recommended in children with prolonged neutropenic fever, even in the absence of localizing signs and symptoms.

RESUMEN

Recent studies indicate an extremely high level of tolerance to boron (B) toxicity in Puccinellia distans (Jacq.) Parl. but the mechanistic basis is not known. Puccinellia distans was exposed to B concentrations of up to 1000 mg B L-1 and root B uptake, growth parameters, B and N contents, H2O2 accumulation and ·OH-scavenging activity were measured. Antioxidant enzyme activities including superoxide dismutase (SOD), ascorbate peroxidase, catalase, peroxidase and glutathione reductase, and lipid peroxidation products were determined. B appears to be actively excluded from roots. Excess B supply caused structural deformations in roots and leaves, H2O2 accumulation and simultaneous up-regulation of the antioxidative system, which prevented lipid peroxidation even at the highest B concentrations. Thus, P. distans has an efficient root B-exclusion capability and, in addition, B tolerance in shoots is achieved by a well-regulated antioxidant defense system.

RESUMEN

Radiotherapy (RT) with concomitant chemotherapy (CT) has improved the therapeutic outcome of patients with locally advanced nasopharyngeal carcinoma (LANC). However, the importance of induction CT before definitive therapy is still undefined. Patients (n=59) who had LANC were included in this retrospective study. They received induction CT consisting of cisplatin and docetaxel followed by definitive RT with cisplatin. The median age was 49 years (18-68). All patients were of stages II (15%), III (63%) and IV (22%). Fifty eight patients could receive 3 cycles of CT. Except one patient, there was no grade 3 or 4 toxicity during induction CT. Chemoradiotherapy could be given to 49 patients (83%). Twelve percent of patients had complete response after induction CT and this number had increased to 95% after the completion of the therapy. Objective responses (complete and partial) were 100% after the completion of the therapy. Median follow up time was 29 months. Nine patients had relapse (2 had local only, 4 distant, 3 local and distant). Three patients who had both local and distant relapse died during follow-up. Three year overall and progression free survival rates were 94.9% and 84.7%, respectively. Induction CT with docetaxel and cisplatin is a feasible and tolerable treatment for patients with LANC.
